Alvin Tan

Alvin Tan is one of those rare individuals with the perfect combination of qualities you'd want in a music instructor: He's a very talented drummer, an unbelievably patient and dedicated teacher who has a gift of bringing out the best in his students, and he's so passionate about music that it's hard not to get infected by his enthusiasm!

Oh, and the band performance classes in The Music Lab are totally cool. We get to try playing songs in a band and, within half a year, it's entirely possible to perform in public with a real band!

I'm so glad I chose The Music Lab for my musical journey. Alvin is awesome, the classes are fun and the studio is like a nice second home to go to, where everyone is friendly and welcoming. I feel so lucky to be a student there!

"When I joined The Music Lab last year I was just looking for a place to improve my skills, but what I found was something so much more than that. I found not only the opportunity to learn from professionals but also the opportunity to apply what I learnt, I found a community that acts like a family more than anything, and I must say there's no other place quite like this around.

I'm into my 5th month of lessons with Alvin, and I feel that I've matured the most as a drummer during this period of time since I first started learning how to beat things. Until I find a better word than awesome, Alvin is an AWESOME drummer and teacher; knowledgeable yet humble, patient, ever-encouraging and truly dedicated to helping me correct the flaws in my techniques. As a full-time student learning music, it's often difficult to maintain motivation with a heavy workload, CCAs and all, but Alvin continually inspires me to strive for new goals and reach the playing level I am aiming to achieve.

Modern Drummer says, "As a teacher, you have a chance to influence a life."

From my experience at the Music Lab, not only did I learn about the technical aspects of drumming, I'm also exposed to so much more, be it being having an open mind with all styles of music, gear knowledge, and networking. But what's most important is that Alvin inspires me to read and listen beyond the classroom. To me, a teacher can only teach you so much. But if he can influence and inspire you with a healthy learning attitude, that will be something you can take away with you for life. Aside from being my teacher, Alvin is also a friend. And that is also why I love learning at the Music Lab so much. It makes me feel part of a big, happy family. You may have a bad day before lesson but I can assure you that you will always come out of the Music Lab smiling!

Music Lab (Drumming Lessons With Alvin) I'm Eric and had just finished my first 6 months of Drumming Lessons with Alvin at The Music Lab and will be continuing my next 6 months of lessons effective 5th Jan 2008. Alvin is in fact I would say, the Best Drumming Instructor I ever had. I could now do so many things I never could have thought of doing in just a mere 6 months in my learning experience playing comfortably. My drastic improvement in drumming was justify by the many Musician (some of which are professionals) that I had the chance to Rehearse and Play with quite often and also my family members who have to tolerate my drumming practice every evenings.

My entire style of drumming did changed since in the past short 6 months, and most of all, it was a most wonderful experience I had at the Music Lab - Having Fun In My Lesson (though honestly my Instructor can be pretty strict/nasty at many a times sorry Alvin, that's true) - but that's disciplining and thanks) hahaha !. Well, I will say Music Lab not only teaches me Drumming but Music Education as a whole for me (as A Drummer) which is of utmost importance, and I do have Ears & Mind Training in Music & Drumming too at Music Lab (if you understabd what I mean here), especially when I'm with a Band who have singers and we play Jazz, Funk, Rock, Pop etc.

I highly recommend Music Lab to learning Drummers for excel in drumming. But a word word of Advice from me. Learning Drummers must Practice Hard and follow the Syllabus. Some practices could be boring initially especially when you have to do it at a slow speed (that is required to set the Basic and Timing correct - it's very important here) - and you will see the reward only in later months from your own personal progress - The word is patient & endurance here.

Bani Rahman

"I enrolled at the The Music Lab six months ago after realizing that I had been stuck in a playing rut with the same tired rock covers and aimless attempts at covering new genres. It was perhaps one of the wisest decisions I had ever made. My instructor Bani is an amiable character who guided me through the fundamentals of playing bass and the importance of staying in the pocket. His groove and rhythm oriented lessons led to me playing with a much better feel and greater rhythmic authority. I was already impressed with the school's comprehensive syllabus and resources, but Bani took it a step further by imparting to me his knowledge of music theory and playing tips only an experienced professional can offer.

Bani's lessons have always been well paced and extremely enjoyable. His unique style of teaching involves jamming along on the guitar such that I have the space to develop my own bass lines. Such an approach not only makes learning less of a chore, but also offers me the thrilling experience of playing together with an expert musician. Furthermore, he would try his best to demonstrate the nuances of various genres using the keyboard and drums. Bani has also been prompt to give me the heads up on valuable learning opportunities like clinics and workshops which I might have been unaware of.

After these months with Bani, I realized that I have truly achieved my goal of musical development. Whereas I was once limited to learning off tabs for rock and pop covers, I find myself growing increasingly confident improvising my own lines in genres like Bossa Nova, Swing, Blues and perhaps even a touch of Latin. The versatility and groove were the very things I sought when I first started looking for a suitable instructor, and I am glad to say that Bani had indeed lit the path. I wish to express my deepest gratitudes to Bani, and I strongly recommend him to any bassists out there looking for some direction in their playing.

Lily Anna Nuris

"Lily Anna Nuris is my IDOL!! She is an inspiration to work with and blows me away everytime she sings! when can i sign up for classes??" - Cheryl Miles, Producer Presenter Power98FM

"For the many years that I have seen Lily Nuris perform and sing her heart out, she strikes me as a confident, strong and solid singer. Her vocal range always surprises me as she challenges herself to greater heights. She is a truly remarkable talent as she also shows her versatility with just about any genre of music. Probably due to her ethnicity, she cannot help herself but to allow all the different rhythms flow out of her." - Anne Weerapas

"Lily Nuris has been one of the great persons to work with. I have done music projects such as TV Commercials and other multimedia projects, which required professional vocalists. She is one of the very few options when it comes to professional female vocalists. Her right attitude towards any recording projects is the most desired by many professional post production studios and composers in Singapore." - Wayne Khin, Home Studio

"Esplanade - Theatres On The Bay is privileged to have Lily Anna performed in our venues on many occasions in the different venues like the Concert Hall, the Recital Studio and the Outdoor Theatre. The highlight was the Coffee Morning Afternoon Tea series where she did two solo sold-out shows in Dec 07 with a tribute to legendary divas like Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin, etc. She had her audience enthralled and entertained with her powerful, soulful and versatile vocals. Certainly a bright star to be, if not already is. Esplanade, and Singapore, will certainly see more of her performances very soon."
- Kelvin Chiew, Esplanade

"Lily anna has a warm and friendly disposition and the few times that I vocal coached her when she was in MDC (Music Drama Company) had been most gratifying. She has a fantastic voice, with an extensive vocal range and is a versatile singer in any genre of music. In my opinion , she 's on her way to being one of Singapore's best ! - Ann Hussein 2007

"Lily Anna Nuris worked in SAF Music And Drama Company for more than 3 years. In SAF MDC she performed in major SAF Events, ASEAN dignitaries and overseas communities eg Australia and Brunei as one of our best female singers . Nuris is a versatile singer who is comfortable in delivering pop, jazz, evergreen, hip hop as well as traditional Malay songs. She has wide vocal range and could harmonise with others. With her experience and bearing, she could share and coach anybody who aspire to be a singer." - Shida, Manager (Marketing and Production), SAF MDC

Fugene Choy

I’ve been a student under Fugene for 2 years and I must say he is a very dedicated instructor. I’ve learnt a lot under him, especially technically. It’s been an experience to have him as my mentor and i’ve understood the “guitar language” in greater dept. Before I started lessons with him, I found myself stagnant as a guitarist. It was hard to improve with my own effort so I decided to look for an instructor. And indeed, through my weekly lessons with Fugene, I’ve become more competent with the fretboard as it was a great challenge for me to recognise the different notes and sound them accurately.

He has taught me various essential skills that is required of an all-rounded guitarist. I have picked up many tricks on the guitar from him as well. Personality wise, Fugene is very friendly and easy-going, which makes the learning process much easier and pleasant. Lastly, Fugene has a strong passion for the music he plays and would be be my recommended teacher to learn under if you sign up as a music lab student! - Nicholas Lee

Ervin Dragon

I started my musical journey with mr dragon almost 3 years ago, the skills and deep knowledge that he has imparted was invaluable to me. I learnt many musical \" tools\" and ideas that has helped me to tackle tunes and standards no matter no matter how difficult they were. I sincerly thank him from the bottom of my heart. - Chan Sze Tah

Dragon has a great passion for teaching. His meticulous and patient ways allowed me to understand jazz in a deeper level. He provides well written guidelines as a basis and allows me to express my own ideas at the same time. His experiences encompasses the old as well as the new - being able to interpret any song and play it effortlessly. His lessons are informative and always a joy to attend to. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend anyone who is interested in playing pop or jazz piano to Dragon - the best teacher ever. - Jeanette Tjoeng
