Before Liang Hong became my instructor, I already had two previous drum teachers for over a year and was still struggling to play. If there was a perfect example of musically challenged, I would be it. My sense of timing was horrible, I couldn't play to a metronome, I would freeze whenever I made a mistake and refuse to continue, I would also freeze every time I came to a drum fill, I refused to explore and expand on rudiments and fills, I couldn't properly place a bass drum on a sixteenth note, and I couldn't even play simple songs (eg. "The Reason" by Hoobastank) without a music score. With Liang Hong as my instructor, I don't believe I'm as musically challenged as I once thought. My sense of timing has improved with his persistence in using a metronome during lessons. He was very patient with me and continued to teach with the metronome until I could play to it. My previous two teachers had given up hope on that and he didn't. When I make a mistake on a new groove or fill now, I don't freeze and refuse to play. I move around the drumset now instead of playing everything on the snare. My new found confidence came from his encouragement and his explanations of drumming. My bass drum on sixteenth notes are now mostly on time and after working on a song with him, I don't need a music score. If sense of feel can be taught, I do believe he's teaching it. Best of all, after over two years of learning the drums and not a word out of my dad, he finally commented that my drumming improved. All my improvements were with Liang Hong and I wouldn't want to learn drums from anyone else now. - Deja Tan
